Dr. Penny Reid
POST-DOC SCIENTIST / SEROLOGY MANAGER

Penny Reid graduated from the University of Bradford with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science in 2003. This was followed by a PhD investigating the role of a group of ligand-activated transcription factors known as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in tumour angiogenesis. This project involved looking at the expression of PPARs in human endothelial cells and the potential of PPAR ligands to affect endothelial cell growth and tube formation in an in vitro model of angiogenesis. This incorporated a wide range of molecular and cellular biology techniques. These studies found that certain PPAR ligands may inhibit endothelial cell growth and tube formation, but via a pathway independent of the PPARs themselves.

After completing her PhD she then went on to work as a research assistant at the University of Sheffield for two years, investigating the potential pro-angiogenic role of the secreted glycoprotein osteoprotegerin (OPG).

Penny joined Micropathology Ltd in 2010 and is involved in the company’s molecular diagnostic work, particularly the quantitation of HIV-1 viral loads.
