Dr. Phil Bennett BSc (Hons), PhD
- Clinical Scientist
- Molecular Geneticist
Dr Bennett completed his first degree in Medical Biochemistry at the University of Birmingham in 1992. He went on to undertake a PhD in the University Department of Medicine at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
His doctoral thesis described work on the molecular biology and genetics of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease. After this, with his established interest in neurogenetics, he completed two further postdoctoral research fellowships.
The first, in the University Department of Clinical Neurology, continued his work on Parkinson’s and in particular the Parkinsonian like syndrome known as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
The second was within the Molecular Psychiatry Group, based at the Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital. In this post his main responsibility was to complete a large genome wide screen using affected sibling pairs to look for chromosomal regions showing genetic linkage to Bipolar Affective disorder (Manic Depression).
He is a member of the British Society of Human Genetics, the UK Clinical Molecular Genetics Society and the International Society of Forensic Genetics. He is also a State Registered Clinical Scientist (Molecular Genetics).
He maintained regular links with the company since its formation, providing such things as bioinformatics support on a consultancy basis. In March 2001, he joined Micropathology Ltd, where in addition to continuing such work full time, he has expanded the company’s range of diagnostic and research activities within the molecular genetics field. |
