John Beekman
John has a considerable history in viral diagnostics and in working with quality management systems including GLP/GMP, ISO9001 and UKAS 17025. He graduated in 1992 with a BSc (Hons) in Genetics from Aberdeen University and in 1997 with an MSc in Biotechnology from De Montfort University. Between these degrees he served as an MLSO with the Regional Virus Laboratory in Glasgow performing many immunological, cellular and molecular based diagnostic assays. Following his MSc he held a role as Study Director for Q-1 Biotech Ltd in Glasgow where he was able to use his viral diagnostic experience developing customised assays for the biopharmaceutical industry.
He then moved in to product development with Serologicals Ltd., Edinburgh, developing human monoclonal antibodies against viral antigens to be used in diagnostic immunoassay kits. A departure from diagnostics saw him do a 2 year stint as a Research Assistant for Edinburgh University looking for the genetic causes of Schizophrenia. Another development role followed with the Plasma Fractionation Centre at the SNBTS developing an ELISA to screen for anti-botulism toxin antibodies in sheep serum for the MOD.
He then returned to diagnostics with the Scottish Agricultural College for their diagnostic service, screening by immunoassay for the major pathogens of livestock. He joined Micropathology in March 2009. |
