Dr. Joanna Brown BSc (Hons), PhD
Joanna Brown graduated with a first class Honours degree in Biochemistry at the University of Warwick in 2001. During this degree course, she spent a year of technical secondment within the R&D department of Nycomed Amersham, helping to develop imaging technologies.
Following her first degree, Joanna undertook 3 years of research studying the cellular journey of the major storage protein of Ricinus communis (castor bean), 2S albumin, which is also a highly potent allergen. This work is of particular interest as the toxin ricin is also found stored in this plant. The research involved the fine mapping of the intracellular routing of 2S albumin through the plant secretory pathway, identifying the vacuolar targeting signal of the protein, and characterising potential sorting receptors in order to facilitate understanding of complex plant pathways. The techniques used in this work included molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, pulse-chase analysis in conjunction with electron microscopy and immunogold labelling.
In 2004, Joanna joined Micropathology Ltd and she is currently involved in the company’s molecular diagnostic work and research and development.
